Alopecia universalis is a condition that causes the immune system to mistakenly attack the hair follicles of the face, head and body, resulting in complete hair loss. It is a more severe form of alopecia areata. There is currently no cure for this condition and it is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. This condition may persist for a long time, or at some points hair regrowth can occur, even after many years if the inflammation subsides.

What Causes Alopecia Universalis?

<p>This condition is thought to be a result of your immune system thinking the hair follicles are a threat and it starts to attack them, causing a cycle of patches of hair being shed. As it progresses, entire areas of the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, bear, and body hair can result it total hair loss.</p>

How Is Alopecia Universalis Treated?

There are no FDA-approved treatments for this condition, but in some cases injections may be used.
