Alopecia universalis is a condition that causes the immune system to mistakenly attack the hair follicles of the face, head and body, resulting in complete hair loss. It is a more severe form of alopecia areata. There is currently no cure for this condition and it is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. This condition may persist for a long time, or at some points hair regrowth can occur, even after many years if the inflammation subsides.
This condition is thought to be a result of your immune system thinking the hair follicles are a threat and it starts to attack them, causing a cycle of patches of hair being shed. As it progresses, entire areas of the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, bear, and body hair can result it total hair loss.
There are no FDA-approved treatments for this condition, but in some cases injections may be used.
