Rosacea

Rosacea causes skin redness that typically affects the face and will worsen over time if left untreated.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects the face. Rosacea worsens with time if left untreated. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, around 14 million Americans struggle with rosacea. There are four different types of rosacea:

  • Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: Redness, flushing, visible blood vessels.
  • Papulopustular rosacea: Redness, swelling, acne-like breakouts.
  • Phymatous rosacea: Thickening of the skin with bumpy texture.
  • Ocular rosacea: Irritated, red eyes, which can also be swollen (may resemble signs of a stye).

What Causes Rosacea?

The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it could be due to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors, along with abnormalities in the blood vessels. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene and it is not contagious.

Other possible triggers of rosacea include:

  • Temperature extremes
  • Emotional stress
  • Sunlight or wind exposure
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Hot/spicy food or beverages
  • Cosmetics
  • Exercise
  • Medications that dilate blood vessels, such as some blood pressure medications

Anyone can develop rosacea, but it is more common in middle-aged women with fair skin.
