While dry skin is not a serious medical issue, it can certainly be uncomfortable and make you feel self-conscious. It can also lead to other issues like skin infections
Dry skin, or xerosis, is a condition in which the skin does not have enough moisture or hydration. It can begin to feel very tight, itchy, flaky, and/or rough.
Unfortunately, dry skin can be a lifelong condition for some individuals. It also increases with age, especially over the age of 40. Dry skin can be caused by:
Certain weather (cold, dry winters)
Frequent bathing, or hot baths/showers
Harsh soaps/detergents
Sun exposure
While dry skin is not a serious medical condition, it can certainly be uncomfortable and unsightly. It can also lead to other issues like skin infections. This is due to the fact that the skin’s normal protective barrier is compromised. Severely dry skin may cause deep cracks or fissures in the skin, which can open and bleed, allowing bacteria to enter and cause infections.
Treatment is important to restore the skin barrier and keep it healthy. Certain over-the-counter moisturizers can help, as well as avoiding certain triggers, such as prolonged bathing, hot showers, sun exposure and swimming in chlorine. In severe cases, prescription creams or ointments may be necessary to heal the skin.
