Melasma

Also known as chloasma faciei or the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma is a condition that most commonly affects women.

What Is Melasma?

Melasma appears as grayish-brown patches on the face and can often appear on the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. It can also sometimes show up on the chest and forearms. Only about 10% of melasma cases happen in men.

Causes of Melasma

While there is no known cause of melasma, studies show that people with more active melanocytes are more likely to develop the condition. Genetics can also play a role. There are also some triggers of the condition, including:

  • Exposure to the sun or UV light
  • Hormonal shifts, such as those experienced during pregnancy
  • Birth control pills
  • Skincare products that irritate the skin

Cosmetic Treatments for Melasma

Our team provides several cosmetic options for improving the appearance of melasma. Based on your skin and individual needs, we will determine which treatment is best for you and create a personalized plan.

Radiofrequency Microneedling

Radiofrequency microneedling is an effective treatment for fine lines, skin tightening and facial rejuvenation. Microneedling with radiofrequency specifically uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat the deeper layer of skin. Then as the skin grows back with new collagen and elastin, the surface will naturally thicken and tighten. Treatment is minimally invasive and is considered safe and effective for all skin types.

DermaPeel

DermaPeel is our signature aesthetic treatment, which involves a combination of two or more exfoliations, ranging from DermaSweep, Dermaplaning and chemicals peels. A DermaPeel can be tailored for any skin type and sensitivity. Regular treatments improve overall texture and tone leaving the skin smoother and brighter.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are composed of acids that exfoliate dead skin cells and stimulate new skin cells to come to the surface, making your skin appear healthier and more youthful.
