She returned to Chicago to complete her dermatology residency at Cook County Hospital, where she was named chief resident in her final year.

Dr. Zahner is a board-certified fellow of the American Society of Mohs Surgery and board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology. She has hospital staff appointments at Hinsdale Hospital, LaGrange Hospital, and Delnor Hospital.
