Volume Loss
COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY
What is Volume Loss?
Also known as soft tissue atrophy, volume loss is a condition in which the skin begins to lose its fullness and elasticity. It is a natural function of aging but can be exacerbated by certain lifestyle choices or by episodes of weight loss. Volume loss does not cause any physical discomfort to the individual, but it can cause emotional and psychological strain. For this reason, many seek out dermatological and medical intervention for the condition.
Signs and Symptoms of Volume Loss
Volume loss most commonly occurs in middle-aged to older adults but can happen in cases of weight loss as well. Signs of volume loss include:
- Sagging skin, especially around the cheeks and jowls
- Hollows around the eyes
- A withered look to the face
- An increased presence of wrinkles
What Causes Volume Loss
Volume loss is caused by a combination of aging, genetic predispositions and lifestyle choices. As we age, we lose proteins such as collagen in our skin that give it its fullness and elasticity. Lifestyle choices such as smoking and excess sun exposure can also increase volume loss. Finally, individuals may have a genetic predisposition toward losing volume in the face as they get older.
How Volume Loss is Treated
There are a number of ways in which you can treat volume loss. One of the most popular is the application by a medical professional of injectable dermal fillers to the face. These substances fill out areas of the face to eliminate hollows and reduce sagging and laxity. This process of injection is done quickly and easily in your doctor’s office and requires no anesthesia. Patients can also consider topical solutions that contain plumping ingredients and can create some improvement in the skin. Getting proper exercise and hydrating well can also improve the appearance of volume loss in an individual.
