Vulvar Conditions
For women who experience discomfort or itching in the vulvar or vaginal area, many assume a yeast infection may be to blame. But skin issues may be the cause.
The vulva surrounds the vagina and is comprised of a fatty pad covered in hair called the mons pubis, outer lips called the labia majora and inner lips called the labia minora. The vulva also contains the clitoris, which is a bundle of nerve endings and the urethral opening which allows the passage of urine.
Common Vulvar Issues
There are a variety of skin issues that can occur with vulvar skin, including:
- Dermatitis: This causes inflammation of the vulvar skin, possibly causing a rash or itching.
- Lichen planus: In the vulva, this can cause bleeding, pain, burning and painful sex.
- Lichen sclerosis: This shows up as white patches in the vulva and can cause itching and sexual discomfort.
- Psoriasis: This chronic skin issue causes rapid growth of skin cells, which leads to flaky or scaly patches.
- Ulcers: Vulva ulceration can result from infections, inflammation and other skin issues.
