How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
Microdermabrasion, also known as microderm, uses tiny crystals that are sprayed onto the skin to gently remove the outer layer of the epidermis. Microdermabrasion is a gentler alternative to dermabrasion and does not require any numbing medicine. In essence, it is a deep exfoliation and skin rejuvenation procedure that can leave your skin looking brighter and feeling softer. Microderm also has a quicker recovery time then more abrasive procedures such as dermabrasion and chemical peels.
Conditions Treated by Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is ideal for treating minor skin conditions, blemishes and texture issues. It can also help address scarring left from acne. As a quick healing skin intervention, microderm is an easy way to rejuvenate the skin and give it a more youthful glow without the long downtime of more abrasive measures. If you think microdermabrasion would be the right treatment for you, speak with your dermatologist to explore your options.
What Will The Procedure Feel Like?
Microdermabrasion is relatively painless. You will feel a cool wand both glided and taut with suction over the skin. Our microdermabrasion is crystal-free, therefore minimizing any cause of irritation.
Do I Have To Do Anything To Prepare In Advance?
Discontinue use of any topical retinoids (Retin-A, Tazorac, Differin, Ziana, Epiduo, Tretinoin, Clear Plus, Avene Retrinal or Triacneal, Triluma, etc.) and mechanical or granular exfoliation for five days prior to treatment. Avoid facial waxing for seven days prior to treatment.
Follow the recommended skincare regimen as directed by your service provider for treatment. Make sure your skin is not irritated or inflamed before a treatment.
Please tell your provider if you have a history of cold sores as we recommend pretreatment to prevent a flare. Treatment may not be performed if there is an active cold sore.
What Will I Look Like Afterwards?
Your skin may appear slightly flushed or “pinkish” post-treatment and diminishes throughout the day. This will vary depending on the strength of the treatment given. Your skin will feel smoother and brighter. Occasionally you will notice mild areas of scratches and / or petechiae (resembling tiny broken blood vessels) due to the suction of the device. This resolves within one-week post treatment.
When Will I See Results?
Results will vary per patient and realistic expectations will be discussed during your first treatment. Having a good at-home regimen will help attain optimum results. In addition, smoking, excessive alcohol, and excessive sun exposure will limit results.
How Many Treatments Are Necessary?
You will see immediate results with skin feeling smoother and looking brighter. Initially, we recommend four to six treatments spaced every two weeks. Then treatments should be monthly for maintenance. Treatments are designed to boost topical product therapy at home to optimize results. You will also need an at-home regimen for maintenance. Having a good at-home regimen will help attain optimum results. In addition, smoking, excessive alcohol, and excessive sun exposure will limit results.
Who Cannot Have The Treatment?
A consultation at the time of treatment will be performed and the skin will be assessed to make sure the patient has no contraindications for treatment. Patients who are on Accutane or have been on Accutane at least six months prior are not candidates.
Pregnant and nursing patients: We can tailor all treatments using chemical peels and products that are safe for expectant or nursing mothers.
