Fluorouracil (5FU) Treatments

How Does Fluorouracil (5FU) Work?

In some skin conditions and diseases, skin cells grow at an abnormal rate, leading to unusual growths and lesions on the skin. Fluorouracil works to slow this growth by killing off the fast-growing cells in the affected region of the skin. It is applied topically to the affected area and comes only in a prescription variety, as it contains cytotoxic agents that are toxic to living cells.

Conditions Treated by Fluorouracil (5FU)

Fluorouracil is used primarily in the treatment of cancerous and precancerous growths on the skin, as well as sun-damaged areas of the skin. As such, it is used to treat a range of skin cancers. It is a chemotherapy agent and should only be used in careful consultation with a medical professional familiar with your case.
